After brilliantly winning the World Cup 2022 with Argentina, now is the time for Messi to think seriously about his future.
Messi returns to Barcelona?
Following Argentina’s World Cup victory, Barcelona president Joan Laporta tweeted: “Well done, Leo. Indeed, you merit it. That’s a moment football’s owed you.”
The president of Blaugrana had originally planned to attend the World Cup final, but changed his mind at the last minute.
On the campaign trail for the presidency, Laporta pledged to do everything it took to keep Messi at Barcelona but failed. The departure of the Argentine, who set several club records while playing for Blaugrana, was lamented by their legion of devoted supporters.
Messi’s future once his contract with PSG expires in June 2019 is up in the air.
But Messi understood that Barcelona was the club that believed in him initially, and that they were the ones who gave him everything he had. With Barcelona, he amassed a total of 35 victories (4 Champions League, 10 LaLiga, 7 Copa del Rey, 3 Club World Cups, 3 European Super Cups and 8 Spanish Super Cups).
Messi to Miami: Reuniting with old friends
Messi could even “retire” to Inter Miami and experience the “glamour” and “special compensation” of Major League Soccer.
The David Beckham-founded club has made it clear they want to get Messi. If Messi takes Beckham up on his offer, he may make around $14 million each year. His pals on the team, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez, have reported been contacted by Inter Miami in an effort to recruit him.
Messi stays at PSG?
PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi said he had visited with Messi’s agent after the World Cup to explore the potential of a new deal, and the announcement came just before the final.
After his strong showing at the 2022 World Cup, the Paris squad thinks Messi still has a few years left in top-level competition. So, even though Barcelona was pulling at them, PSG quickly devised plans to keep Messi. To keep Messi around for the foreseeable future, PSG must trigger the one-year automatic extension through June 2024 and the player must sign a new contract until June 2025.
